What is the primary difference between astronomy and astrophysics?
Astronomy is the broader study of celestial objects and phenomena, including their positions, movements, and origins. Astrophysics specifically applies the principles of physics to understand the nature of these objects and phenomena, focusing on their physical properties like temperature, density, and composition.
What is a light-year, and why is it used in astronomy?
A light-year is the distance that light travels in one Earth year. It is used because the distances to stars and galaxies are so vast that using kilometers or miles would result in extremely large and cumbersome numbers.
Explain the concept of a black hole.
A black hole is a region in spacetime where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. This extreme gravity is a result of a large amount of matter being compressed into a very small space.
What is the difference between a star and a planet?
A star is a celestial body that generates its own light and heat through nuclear fusion in its core. A planet is a celestial body that orbits a star, does not produce its own light (it reflects starlight), and is massive enough for its own gravity to make it round.
What are the main components of our solar system?
The main components include the Sun (a star), eight planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune), dwarf planets (like Pluto), numerous moons, asteroids, comets, and interplanetary dust and gas.
What is the Big Bang theory, and what evidence supports it?
The Big Bang theory is the prevailing cosmological model for the universe's origin and evolution. It states that the universe began as an extremely hot, dense point that expanded and cooled over billions of years. Evidence includes the observed expansion of the universe (Hubble's Law), the cosmic microwave background radiation, and the abundance of light elements.
